Engineering Manager – Ubuntu Package Management

About the role

We are seeking an Engineering Manager to lead the team responsible for Ubuntu package management and the broader system lifecycle experience. You will combine technical leadership with people management, shaping architecture, roadmap, and quality while supporting the growth of experienced engineers.

Key responsibilities

• Define technical vision and roadmap for package management, software distribution, driver/firmware management, updates and release processes.
• Guide architecture and engineering decisions, participating in design reviews and ensuring reliability, security and maintainability.
• Lead and mentor a team of senior engineers, fostering ownership, collaboration and continuous improvement.
• Plan and deliver improvements across multiple release cycles, balancing innovation with stability.
• Collaborate with product, security, desktop, server, release engineering and OEM teams, as well as upstream open‑source communities.

Required profile

• Strong academic background in Computer Science, STEM or equivalent professional experience.
• Proven experience in software engineering and leading engineering teams.
• Deep expertise with Linux distribution technologies, package management systems and software lifecycle infrastructure.
• Understanding of release engineering processes and operating‑system architecture.
• Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a globally distributed organization.
