Mechanical Technician Trainee – Supplementary Manpower Program

About the role

The Mechanical Technician Trainee (SMP) will support the maintenance of refinery and associated mechanical equipment, applying Samref procedures for condition monitoring, repairs, and preventive maintenance. This hands‑on apprenticeship offers exposure to a wide range of machinery in a safety‑focused environment.

Key responsibilities

• Follow Samref SHE/OIMS policies, use required PPE and maintain workshop tidiness.
• Read and interpret schematics, machinery manuals, QA/QC manuals and P&IDs for disassembly, repair and re‑assembly.
• Perform inspections, testing, repairs and preventive maintenance on pumps, compressors, steam turbines, motors, gearboxes and other rotating equipment.
• Carry out daily condition‑monitoring routines (vibration checks, oil condition, leak detection) and report abnormal findings.
• Use Microlog vibration monitoring software and specialist equipment to diagnose mechanical‑seal issues.
• Assist senior technicians in root‑cause analysis, repair of vibration probes and coordination with DCS/Instrumentation teams.
• Document work, submit behavior‑based safety observations and attend weekly safety meetings.

Required profile

• Willingness to work in a refinery environment and comply with strict safety procedures.
• Ability to read technical documentation such as schematics and P&IDs.
• Basic understanding of mechanical equipment and willingness to learn on the job.

Required skills

• Use of Microlog vibration monitoring software.
• Operation of calibrated test equipment (vibration meters, laser temperature guns, alignment kits).
• Knowledge of pump types (centrifugal, positive displacement, overhung, vertical, double suction, multistage).
• Familiarity with compressors, steam turbines, motors and gearboxes.
• Conducting condition‑monitoring routines (vibration, oil analysis, leak checks).
