Medical Underwriting Assistant Manager

About the role

Under the guidance of the Senior Underwriting Manager, the Medical Underwriting Assistant Manager will support the underwriting team in evaluating and approving medical insurance risks. The role balances profitability, compliance, and risk management while contributing to the development of underwriting staff.

Key responsibilities

• Underwrite risks within delegated authority, ensuring decisions are profitable and aligned with company standards.
• Assist senior underwriters on complex cases and provide second‑opinion reviews during peak periods.
• Train and develop underwriters, coordinating enrollment in company‑sponsored courses.
• Document underwriting comments clearly and maintain up‑to‑date standards in collaboration with actuaries and medical experts.
• Review claims referred by the Claims Department, focusing on contestability and learning from original underwriting decisions.
• Monitor non‑productive business, conversion and retention ratios, and recommend pricing or policy adjustments.
• Prepare detailed performance reports and presentations for senior management.
• Ensure compliance with internal controls, audit requirements, and regulatory bodies such as IA & CCHI.

Required profile

• Minimum 8 years (96 months) of experience in medical underwriting or related insurance functions.
• Strong knowledge of medical terminologies and underwriting principles.
• Ability to train and mentor junior staff.
• Excellent analytical and reporting skills.
