Technical Design Engineer

About the role

The Technical Design Engineer role for the production workshop in the event industry will be responsible for translating creative concepts into detailed, build‑ready technical drawings (CAD) for events, exhibitions, and activations. You will act as the bridge between the design team and the workshop production team, ensuring that all custom fabrication is safe, compliant with health & safety regulations, and executed efficiently.

Key responsibilities

• Produce detailed production drawings, 3D concepts, and construction plans using AutoCAD, SolidWorks or Inventor for workshop fabrication and on‑site use.
• Perform and review structural analysis and load calculations to guarantee structural integrity of custom event structures, rigging points, and suspended elements.
• Design and develop prototypes for scenic elements, jigs, and fixtures to streamline assembly.
• Ensure designs are structurally sound, comply with event regulations and health & safety standards.
• Collaborate with project managers and workshop technicians to optimise workflows, solve construction challenges, control quality and manage costs.
• Research, select and manage materials, create Bills of Materials (BOM) and maintain accurate engineering records and as‑built drawings.

Required profile

• 5+ years of experience in custom fabrication, scenic construction, exhibition design or event production.
• Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design or a related field, or equivalent experience.
• Advanced proficiency in 3D CAD software (SolidWorks or Inventor) and 2D AutoCAD, plus Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop) for conceptual work.
• Strong understanding of manufacturing processes such as sheet‑metal work, CNC machining and carpentry, and of material properties.
• Proven ability to solve complex technical problems in a fast‑paced, deadline‑driven environment and a hands‑on attitude to support the shop floor.
