Viral Vector Staff Scientist

About the role

The Staff Scientist in the Viral Vector Facility (VVF) at KAUST will lead the design, production, and delivery of high‑quality viral vectors such as AAV and lentivirus to support cutting‑edge biomedical research. The role combines advanced molecular biology, process optimisation, and team leadership to position KAUST as a regional hub for viral vector technologies.

Key responsibilities

• Collaborate with researchers to select and customise viral vector systems for specific scientific questions.
• Produce safe, high‑titer AAV and lentiviral vectors tailored to experimental needs.
• Supervise and mentor a laboratory technician, overseeing daily operations and workflow efficiency.
• Coordinate multiple research projects, ensuring milestones and deliverables are met.
• Develop, implement, and maintain SOPs for vector production, ensuring reproducibility and compliance.
• Maintain GLP standards and biosafety compliance in line with Institutional Biosafety and Ethics Committee guidelines.
• Integrate laboratory data with the Bio‑Medical Platform and work with IT/bioinformatics teams for data management.
• Design and introduce innovative techniques to improve vector performance, throughput, and cost‑effectiveness.
• Provide advanced training in molecular genetics and viral vector technologies.
• Handle routine lab duties including procurement, documentation, and equipment maintenance.

Required profile

• PhD in a relevant field (e.g., molecular biology, virology, biomedical engineering).
• 5‑7+ years of hands‑on experience in molecular genetics, cloning, gene editing, viral vector production, and cell culture.
• Strong scientific track record with peer‑reviewed publications and successful project management.
