Charge Nurse – Unit Leader

About the role

The Charge Nurse leads the nursing team on a shift, balancing patient care needs with unit operations. This role ensures high‑quality clinical delivery while supporting staff and maintaining smooth workflow throughout the day.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee patient assessments, care plans and treatment interventions to ensure effective and efficient care.
• Supervise and mentor nursing staff and students, manage shift schedules and workloads.
• Conduct purposeful rounding on the unit, interacting with patients and staff to prevent complications and improve care quality.
• Coordinate care with physicians, therapists and social workers for comprehensive patient management.
• Ensure accurate, timely documentation and compliance with legal and regulatory standards.
• Organise daily unit activities, including admissions, transfers, discharges and maintenance requests.
• Lead emergency and crisis responses, collaborating with emergency services as needed.
• Support staff education, performance evaluations and continuous professional development.
• Manage medical supplies, equipment and unit budget to control costs and maintain resources.
• Promote a positive work environment, foster teamwork and make critical decisions under pressure.

Required profile

• Registered Nurse with experience in acute‑care or hospital settings.
• Proven ability to supervise, mentor and schedule nursing staff.
• Strong clinical judgment, decision‑making and problem‑solving skills.
• Excellent communication and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.
• Knowledge of infection‑control practices and quality‑improvement bundles.
