HAZMAT Officer – Hazardous Materials Safety

About the role

The HAZMAT Officer is responsible for ensuring that all operations involving hazardous materials and waste within the hospital are performed safely and in compliance with national and international regulations.

Key responsibilities

• Develop, interpret and implement policies, procedures and programs related to hazardous materials.
• Conduct field inspections with staff to ensure uniformity and completeness of safety practices.
• Design and deliver training sessions for hospital personnel on hazardous material handling.
• Lead complex investigations and studies concerning emergency hazardous material control.
• Prepare project reports, records, statistics and correspondence.
• Maintain central inventory and MSDS documentation for all hazardous substances.
• Perform monthly inventory checks and respond to spills or releases.
• Arrange disposal of hazardous materials in line with applicable regulations.
• Post safety signage and inform facility users about potential hazards.
• Document all work performed, including removal and remediation activities.

Required profile

• Science degree from a recognized institution.
• Certifications in hazardous safety or equivalent training.
• Experience evaluating staff performance and conducting safety inspections.
• Ability to prepare training materials and technical reports.
