Data Engineer (Remote)

About the role

Soum, a re-commerce marketplace for second-hand goods in the MENA region, is looking for a Data Engineer to design, build and maintain the data infrastructure behind its analytics, machine learning models and decision-making. The role is fully remote, with a Sunday to Thursday schedule from 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM Saudi Arabian time.

Key responsibilities

• Design, build and maintain scalable, reliable data pipelines for analytics, ML models and business reporting.
• Collaborate with data scientists and analysts so that data is available, clean and optimized for downstream use.
• Implement data quality checks, monitoring and validation processes.
• Design efficient ETL/ELT workflows and integrate databases, APIs and third-party tools into centralized storage (data lakes/warehouses).
• Support cloud-based data storage and retrieval, and monitor, troubleshoot and optimize pipelines for large-scale, real-time data flows.
• Apply best practices for query optimization and cost-efficient storage.
• Gather requirements with product, engineering and business stakeholders, and document workflows, schemas and processes.

Required profile

• Preferably 4 years of total experience, including 2+ years in data engineering and 2+ years of SQL and Python in production.
• Experience in fast-growing startup environments is a plus; exposure to real-time frameworks (Kafka, Spark, Flink) is a plus.
• Strong ability to elicit requirements and turn them into actionable data engineering tasks.

Required skills

• Python and SQL.
• ETL/ELT, data warehousing and data modeling.
• AWS, GCP or Azure, with BigQuery, Redshift or Snowflake.
• Airflow and Airbyte are mandatory; Git and GitHub.
• Dataform is mandatory; Docker and Kubernetes are a plus.
• Data governance, security and handling of sensitive data.
