Tailor Technician

About the role

The Tailor Technician is a specialised textile professional who designs, cuts, sews and finishes fabric components for custom event installations. Working in a fast‑paced workshop, the role blends technical sewing expertise with creative interpretation of design briefs to deliver high‑quality upholstery, drapery, soft props and costume pieces.

Key responsibilities

• Develop and cut patterns for upholstery covers, drapes, soft props and other custom textile elements from technical drawings.
• Operate industrial sewing machines (flatbed, overlock, heavy‑duty) and apply hand‑finishing techniques as required.
• Fabricate and fit fabric covers, padding and foam upholstery for custom event furniture and seating.
• Select appropriate fabrics (stretch, structural, sheer, heavy‑duty) based on application and client specifications.
• Construct fabric‑based props, costumes and decorative textile elements according to design references.
• Modify and repair existing textile assets from inventory.
• Produce fabric samples and prototypes for client sign‑off before full production.
• Track and manage fabric stocks, trimmings, threads and notions, flagging replenishment needs.
• Liaise with designers, carpenters and project managers to ensure seamless integration of textile elements with structural components.

Required profile

• Minimum 5 + years experience as a tailor or textile technician, preferably in events, theatre, film or custom furniture.
• High proficiency with industrial sewing machines (flatbed, overlock, walking foot) and hand sewing.
• Strong pattern‑making and garment/upholstery construction skills.
• Broad knowledge of fabric types, properties and appropriate applications.
• Experience with upholstery fabrication including foam, batting and webbing.
• Ability to interpret design drawings, mood boards and fabric specifications.
• Precision and attention to detail in seam finishing and overall construction quality.
• Capability to work under tight production timelines without compromising quality.
