Transportation Operations Manager

About the role

We are seeking a seasoned Transportation Operations Manager to lead the planning, execution, and optimization of our extensive fleet across regional and national networks. The role reports directly to the Director of Transportation and is responsible for driving efficiency, safety, and cost‑effectiveness across more than 2,000 power units.

Key responsibilities

• Oversee daily scheduling, dispatching, routing, and asset allocation for a regional and nationwide network of 2,000+ power units.
• Monitor operational metrics such as Fleet Utilization, Miles Per Truck, Deadhead Percentage, OTIF Delivery, and Cost Per Mile.
• Implement dynamic routing and load‑optimization strategies using modern TMS and telematics platforms.
• Manage fuel programs, toll optimization, and driver dwell‑time reduction across all lanes.
• Enforce compliance with FMCSA, DOT, OSHA, and Hours‑of‑Service/ELD regulations.
• Partner with maintenance and safety teams to keep vehicles in top condition and minimize OOS incidents.
• Lead incident response, accident investigations, root‑cause analyses, and corrective actions.
• Direct, mentor, and develop a high‑performing operations team, including terminal managers, dispatchers, planners, and support staff.
• Collaborate with driver recruitment and retention teams to maintain full driver capacity and low turnover.
• Manage the transportation budget, controlling fuel, driver compensation, equipment leasing, accessorials, and insurance claims.
• Drive continuous‑improvement initiatives (Lean/Six Sigma) to streamline workflows and reduce total cost to serve.
• Analyze telematics data and operational analytics to present strategic recommendations to executive leadership.

Required profile

• 8+ years of progressive leadership in transportation, freight, or fleet operations, preferably managing 1,000+ power units.
• Bachelor’s degree in Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Business Administration, or equivalent operational leadership experience.
• Deep knowledge of DOT, FMCSA, HOS, and hazmat regulations.
• Proven ability to lead multi‑site teams and maintain high driver retention rates in high‑pressure environments.

Required skills

• Advanced proficiency with enterprise‑grade TMS software (e.g., McLeod, TMW, Manhattan Associates, SAP).
• Experience with telematics/ELD solutions (e.g., Samsara, Geotab, Omnitracs).
