Senior Backend Engineer

About the role

Design and build the platform's backend services and APIs – secure, multi‑tenant, and engineered to enterprise, regulator‑grade standards for large‑scale organisations – using modern AI‑assisted workflows to move fast without compromising quality.

Key responsibilities

• Design and build backend services and the platform's GraphQL API.
• Model complex IP‑lifecycle domains such as patents, trademarks, renewals and multi‑jurisdiction rules.
• Implement multi‑tenant data isolation and role‑based access control.
• Own integrations with external systems (ERP, CRM, PTO APIs).
• Own performance, reliability and security (SSO/MFA, encryption, secure SDLC) aligned with NCA controls and PDPL.
• Ship fast with AI‑assisted development (e.g., Claude Code) and build AI guardrails – review gates, automated tests and security checks.
• Reason about large‑scale, multi‑stakeholder programmes and translate non‑functional requirements into sound backend decisions.
• Set engineering standards, review code and mentor other engineers.
• Handle any additional responsibilities assigned by the direct manager.

Required profile

• 8+ years building production backend systems for large‑scale enterprises or government platforms.
• Ability to navigate complex enterprise and regulated environments with multiple stakeholders.
• Deep experience with a modern backend framework – Ruby on Rails strongly preferred.
• Expertise using AI coding tools such as Claude Code and building AI guardrails.
• Strong relational database design (PostgreSQL) and background processing (Sidekiq).
• Proven GraphQL API design experience (graphql‑ruby) and secure authentication flows (SSO, MFA).
• Track record delivering enterprise‑grade, multi‑tenant SaaS at scale.
• Experience thriving in fast‑paced startup settings, managing time and priorities autonomously.
