CICS Operator (L1 System Administrator)

About the role

The CICS Operator provides first‑level (L1) operational support for CICS environments, ensuring system availability and rapid incident response. Working in a 24x7 shift model, the operator follows runbooks and escalation procedures to keep mainframe services running smoothly.

Key responsibilities

• Monitor CICS regions, transactions, queues and system alerts.
• Perform daily operator tasks such as console commands, message handling and job monitoring.
• Coordinate with batch scheduling teams and handle initial incident response, including region restarts.
• Execute basic CICS commands (CEMT) for status checks, start/stop actions and file/queue monitoring.
• Collaborate with DB2, Control‑M and middleware teams during issues.
• Support disaster‑recovery activities, including region startup and failover execution.
• Escalate incidents to L2 teams with detailed logs and maintain shift handover reports.

Required profile

• 8–15 years of experience in mainframe operations or support roles.
• Proven experience in 24x7 production support environments.
• Strong communication and coordination skills.
• Willingness to work rotational shifts.

Required skills

• Strong working knowledge of CICS and z/OS operations.
• Hands‑on experience with mainframe operator activities and console operations.
• Familiarity with batch job monitoring and incident management processes.
• Experience with monitoring tools such as Omegamon or MainView (advantage).
• Ability to follow runbooks and standard operating procedures.
