Principal Structural Engineer – Lead Building Projects

About the role

Mott MacDonald is seeking a Principal Structural Engineer to lead multidisciplinary building structures projects. You will combine technical delivery with managerial leadership, ensuring high‑quality outcomes within scope, budget and schedule.

Key responsibilities

• Prepare and review designs, specifications, calculations, drawings and risk assessments for new builds, refurbishments and maintenance schemes, securing statutory approvals where required.
• Lead concept, scheme and detailed design stages, delivering reliable structural solutions and documentation.
• Conduct structural analysis and design across building projects, ensuring compliance with current codes and standards.
• Inspect on‑site works, monitor quality, and verify adherence to design requirements.
• Manage tasks and resources, tracking delivery against agreed scope, programme and budget.
• Provide technical direction to project teams and present design approaches to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
• Mentor junior engineers and technicians, fostering their technical development.
• Support continuous improvement and digital ways of working, sharing lessons learned.

Required profile

• Extensive experience in structural engineering for building projects, covering new construction, refurbishment and maintenance.
• Proven ability to lead project teams and manage complex design programmes.
• Strong knowledge of current engineering codes, standards and best practices.
• Excellent communication skills for presenting technical information to diverse audiences.
• Commitment to safe, ethical and inclusive working behaviours.
