Site Archaeologist

About the role

The Site Archaeologist will provide archaeological support, monitoring and documentation throughout construction and development activities across Saudi Arabia. Working closely with project, engineering, environmental and HSE teams, the role ensures that any cultural heritage resources are identified, recorded and protected in line with Saudi regulations and recognised archaeological standards.

Key responsibilities

• Conduct archaeological monitoring and field inspections during excavation, earthworks and grading.
• Identify, assess and document artefacts, structures, features and other heritage resources encountered on site.
• Carry out archaeological surveys, test trenching and excavations as required by project scope.
• Maintain detailed records including context sheets, field notes, photographs, plans, sections and registers.
• Apply stratigraphic recording and Harris Matrix principles where applicable.
• Supervise field activities and coordinate subcontractors or specialist personnel.
• Provide timely advice to construction teams on potential impacts to archaeological resources.
• Integrate archaeological requirements with construction, engineering, environmental and HSE plans.

Required profile

• Relevant degree in archaeology, heritage management or a related discipline.
• Experience working on construction or infrastructure projects where cultural heritage is present.
• Familiarity with Saudi heritage regulations and international archaeological standards.
• Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams.

Required skills

• GPS for site positioning.
• Total station surveying.
• Geographic Information Systems (GIS) for mapping and data management.
