Medical Lab Technician

About the role

The Medical Lab Technician will perform patient-focused blood collection and non‑blood sample processing while ensuring strict adherence to safety and quality standards in a hospital laboratory environment.

Key responsibilities

• Communicate with patients, verify identity using two identifiers, and follow JHAH policies for positive patient identification.
• Collect appropriate blood volumes, select correct tube types, and prioritize STAT samples.
• Perform pediatric venipuncture, finger stick, and heel stick procedures with empathy and safety.
• Collect blood cultures using international aseptic techniques to minimize contamination.
• Assess and manage adverse reactions, including patient anxiety and allergies.
• Use Laboratory Information System (LIS) and Hospital Information System (HIS) accurately for sample accession and tracking.
• Process non‑blood samples, issue containers, release test orders, and ensure proper labeling and transport.
• Strictly follow laboratory safety policies, including fire safety, infection control, HazCom, BLS, and proper PPE usage.

Required profile

• Valid SCHS registration and license, kept current.
• Minimum one year of experience in venipuncture and capillary blood collection.
• Knowledge of order of draw, specimen requirements, labeling, handling, and transportation.
• Understanding of infection prevention, hand hygiene, sharps safety, and patient communication.
• Ability to work rotating shifts, weekends, and holidays as needed.
