Principal Fire Protection Engineer (Certified NFPA)

About the role

kbr is looking for a Principal Fire Protection Engineer (Certified NFPA) in Al Khobar. The role acts as a technical advisor on fire protection, fire and gas detection and process safety studies, covering design of fire protection systems, utilities and offsite facilities at conceptual, FEED or detailed design stages of medium to large projects. It requires a minimum of 15 years of experience in oil and gas, hydrocarbons and/or infrastructure.

Key responsibilities

• Develop fire water basis of design reports and fire water and foam water demand calculations
• Prepare P&IDs for fire water networks, foam water systems, pumps and tanks, and hazard and electrical area layouts
• Prepare fire protection equipment data sheets, safety equipment data sheets and hazardous equipment schedules
• Perform steady-state hydraulic calculations and transient analysis for fire water, foam water and water spray systems
• Prepare fire and gas philosophy, detection layouts, block and cause-and-effect diagrams, and 3D mapping studies
• Prepare emergency escape routes, safety signs, showers and safety equipment layouts (SCBA, SABA, windsocks, extinguishers)
• Review third-party scopes of work (EIA, PHA), technical bids and vendor non-material requisitions
• Review safety study reports (PrHA, HAZID, HAZOP, SIL, LOPA, BRA, QRA, consequence modelling) and prepare action close-outs
• Prepare MTOs and construction scope of work documents, attend 3D model reviews, and develop process safety discipline budgets

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in chemical, mechanical or fire engineering or a related field
• Minimum 15 years of engineering experience in design of upstream oil and gas and petrochemical facilities
• Proficiency in English, oral and written
• Preferred: Professional Engineer (P.E.), Certified Fire Protection Specialist (CFPS), HAZOP, functional safety and SCE certifications, and Certified NFPA registration

Required skills

• P&ID/PFD development, hydraulic calculations and equipment sizing
• Hydraulics software such as Pipenet and Elite
• Familiarity with the International Fire Code, NFPA standards, Saudi Aramco standards and the Saudi Building Code
• Excellent written and verbal communication and technical presentation skills
