Graduate Software Engineer – Open Source & Linux (Canonical Ubuntu)

About the role

This graduate position gives you an entry point into large‑scale open source engineering at Canonical. You will work on Linux‑based systems that power cloud, AI, IoT and enterprise infrastructure for millions of users worldwide. The environment is remote‑first, globally distributed and highly collaborative, with strong mentorship and regular in‑person sprints.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and improve open source and commercial software products across the full stack.
• Write clean, efficient production‑grade code in languages such as Python, Golang, Rust, C/C++, JavaScript or Java.
• Contribute to Ubuntu and broader Linux components, participating in design discussions and roadmap planning.
• Engage with users, contributors and internal teams through code reviews, issue tracking and community interaction.
• Support debugging, issue resolution and customer‑facing problem solving with a focus on reliability and performance.

Required profile

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Engineering or a related STEM field.
• Strong academic record and evidence of high performance in technical studies or projects.
• Passion for software engineering and genuine interest in open source ecosystems.
• Motivation to learn, contribute and grow in a fast‑paced, high‑expectation environment.

Required skills

• Proficiency in at least one programming language such as Python, Golang, Rust, C/C++, JavaScript or Java.
• Familiarity with Linux‑based environments and interest in systems‑level development.
• Analytical thinking, problem‑solving ability and attention to detail.
