Infection Control Specialist

About the role
The Infection Control Specialist will lead the implementation and monitoring of the Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) program within a healthcare facility. This role focuses on reducing healthcare‑associated infections, safeguarding patients, visitors, and staff, and ensuring compliance with national regulations and international accreditation standards such as CBAHI and JCI.
Key responsibilities
- Implement and maintain the organization’s IPC program.
- Conduct active surveillance of HAIs using approved definitions and methodologies.
- Collect, analyze, interpret and report infection data and trends.
- Perform routine infection‑prevention audits across clinical and non‑clinical areas.
- Monitor hand‑hygiene, standard and transmission‑based precautions, isolation practices and PPE use.
- Investigate infection outbreaks and recommend corrective actions.
- Develop, review and update IPC policies, procedures and guidelines.
- Provide education and training on infection‑prevention practices to healthcare workers.
- Collaborate with Quality, Patient Safety, Nursing, Medical Staff, Laboratory, Environmental Services and other departments to improve practices.
- Monitor compliance with sterilization, disinfection, environmental cleaning and medical waste management.
- Support accreditation activities, regulatory inspections and quality‑improvement initiatives.
- Prepare regular IPC reports for the Infection Control Committee and senior leadership.
- Participate in emergency preparedness and response to infectious disease outbreaks.
Required profile
- Bachelor’s degree in Nursing, Public Health, Microbiology, Epidemiology, Medical Laboratory Sciences or a related healthcare discipline.
- Current professional license/registration where applicable.
- Certification in Infection Prevention and Control (CIC) preferred.
- Minimum two years of clinical or infection‑prevention experience.
- Experience in a CBAHI‑ or JCI‑accredited healthcare organization preferred.
Required skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
